I made this dish for Waitangi Day (the national day for New Zealand), since Kiwis pride themselves on a lot of their produce – in particular, the lamb. From a previous big grocery shop, there was a sheep’s worth of lamb cuts in the deep freezer. What I pulled out of it was a whole big leg, and I knew to find something that would be special. It was this recipe, which I have had saved up for longer than I care to mention.

The meal turned out to be pretty tasty, and my baby nephew loved the meat. It was just tender enough, absorbed the flavour from both the olives and sundried tomatoes, plus there is plenty still left in the fridge. Paired with some lemon rice, you have a delicious meal that will impress a crowd. And it was one of the easiest, most straightforward recipes yet – the joys of knowing the ways around a kitchen.

We will be doing lamb shanks Oso Bucco for Christmas dinner. We started this tradition a few years ago to get away from the spiral sliced ham that had been served since I was a child. No regrets. We still do the ham New Years Day. It’s too good to give up entirely.

  3. This recipe fails to indicate if the potatoes, olives, sun-dried tomatoes and salt and pepper are to go in the pan or the slow cooker.

Kristina, you may want to substitute artichoke hearts for the sun-dried tomatoes, they’d go beautifully in this dish and would be true to the Greek roots.

  5. Hi Alyssa! I LOVE lamb. Is it possible to make this recipe without the sun-dried tomatoes? I have a weird dislike for them, but the rest of the recipe sounds phenomenal.
