Why This Recipe Hits the Spot

  • Minimal effort, maximum praise. Just layer, bake, and serve. No chopping or stirring! They are ready in under 30 minutes.
  • Extra Cheesy Goodness: When these are baked in the oven, the top gets that perfectly stretchy cheese!
  • Feeds a crowd, fast! Whether itโ€™s neighborhood kids, a random cousin sleepover, or your own hangry crew, this will be your new go-to meal!

Chili Cheese Dog Bake Ingredients

Overhead shot of labeled ingredients.
  • Buns: Use good, quality buns for the chili dogs. The baking will help toast them, which will keep them from getting soggy.
  • Hot Dogs: If you like a good crust on your hot dog, grill or bake the hot dog before you place it in the bun.
  • Cheese Tip: Shred your own for the best melt. Pre-shredded cheese has a coating on it that makes it harder to melt. If you want to switch up the cheese flavor, you can try mozzarella, Colby Jack, or pepper jack for a twist. Want it extra saucy? Go all in with homemade cheese sauce.
  • Condiments: If you want ketchup, yellow mustard, or pickle relish, put it on the buns before you place the hot dogs inside.
  • Optional Toppings: I like to sprinkle diced red onions on these! Other tasty toppings include: mushrooms, peppers, jalapeรฑo peppers, and tomatoes.

How to Make Baked Chili Cheese Dogs

This easy baked chili cheese dog recipe is a fun twist on a game day classic. It is easy to prep (no grill required!), a hit with all ages, and full of wonderful nostalgic flavor. Letโ€™s get started!

  1. Prep: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a 9×13-inch baking dish, add hot dog buns, then put the hot dogs into the buns.
  2. Top Them: Evenly top each hot dog with the type of chili you prefer and then sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese.
  3. Bake: Place in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until cheese is melted and heated through.
  4. Serve: Let the dogs cool slightly before serving.

Alyssa’s Pro Tip

Golden, Toasty Goodness: Want those buns a little crispy and the cheese extra bubbly? Then pop them back in the oven and broil for a couple of minutes. Just keep an eye on it so nothing burns.

Make Ahead and Storage Tips

  • Make-Ahead Tip: If you’re preparing homemade chili, you can make this a day or two in advance to save time when you’re ready to assemble.
  • Storing Leftovers: Chili cheese dogs donโ€™t store well fully assembled, as the buns tend to get soggy. For best results, remove the hot dogs and chili from the buns and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to enjoy them again, just reheat and serve with fresh buns!

I made these yesterday for a quick lunch and found them incredibly easy (and fun) to put together and delicious to eat. The buns crisp up a bit and hold the upright shape for serving. For a healthier dog, I used smoked turkey sausages and they worked perfectly. This is a great recipe for serving a crowd during a sporting event or summer activity.

  2. so over the top in the best way, been years and years, but these would be fun to make on the day off of my diet! So, thank you
