Homemade Dog Treat Ingredients
- Peanut Butter: What dog doesnโt love it? Itโs loaded with protein and healthy fats, but be sure the brand you choose is xylitol-free, as xylitol is toxic to dogs.
- Whole-Wheat Flour: This option packs more nutrients than all-purpose and is better for your pup, but all-purpose works in a pinch.
- No Nutmeg: Nutmeg is toxic to dogs, so keep it out of this recipe. That includes pumpkin pie spice, which almost always contains nutmeg.

- Add Dry Ingredients: Next, add the flour and cinnamon to the wet mixture and stir until a stiff dough has formed.
- Roll Out Doughย and Cut: Turn the dough out on a lightly floured surface, then roll out to ยผ inch thick. Then, use cookie cutters to cut your desired shapes! Bake for about 20-25 minutes, until the edges begin to turn golden brown. Allow to cool completely. Your homemade dog treats are ready!
How to Store Homemade Dog Biscuits

- Atย Room Temperature:ย Store in an airtight container or ziplock bag at room temperature for up to 5 days.
- In the Refrigerator: Your dog treats will keep in the fridge for up to 3 weeks. Store in an airtight container or ziplock bag for best results!
- In the Freezer: When stored in a resealable freezer bag, your treats will last 3 months. Allow to thaw before serving to your pup.

These are good, but unfortunately the spoil in a few days and this recipe makes a lot ๐
Can we use doggy treat molds instead of cookie cutters?
Hi Lia, I think that would work just fine as long as you can be easily pressed into the molds. Just be sure you bake them all the way through, pressing them into a mold might make them thicker so they may need to baked longer. Let me know how they turn out!
Can you substitute Whole Wheat Flour with Oat Flour?
Hi Debbie, thank you for your question. Yes oat flour works great!
Hi Alyssa,
I was so thrilled to find your recipe for dog treats! I love that there are few ingredients and there aren’t any excessive steps. My two Aussies absolutely love them! I made the triple recipe right away the first time I made them. Unfortunately, today I had to throw away most of them because they were covered in mold. ๐
I just had them stored in a basic glass jar with a lid but not an airtight lid. How do you store them, typically? I definitely noticed that some of the treats seemed a little spongy after I took them out of the oven but I assumed they would harden up. I’m guessing I may have taken them out too soon also. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you,
Angela
Hi!! Thanks so much for trying the treats! These are my dog’s favorite!! When you store them, try storing them in an airtight container in a cool, dark place for up to 7 days. They arenโt made with preservatives, so they arenโt shelf stable for longer than that. If they are kept in a warm spot they will spoil faster!
Would it be possible to substitute yams or sweet potatoes for the pumpkin?
Yes, that would be fine!
