Ingredients for Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein

This list of ingredients may look long, but don’t worry, you probably have most of these items on hand.  Traditional asian ingredients like hoisin sauce, soy sauce, and sesame oil are staples you will use again and again for delicious asian flavors.  This Garlic and Beef Broccoli Lo Mein also uses a little bit of garlic, brown sugar, and pepper give the best spice to the sauce!

Variations of Lo Mein

Traditionally Lo Mein is a stir fry meal that is made up of noodles tossed with veggies or meats and an asian sauce.  The great thing about it is that you can customize this incredible mixture of flavors and textures depending on what veggies and meats you have on hand.  Variations will make this meal more convenient and fast, while still giving the same great tasting results!

  • No noodles: Leave out the noodles for a simple veggie and meat stir fry.  The thick and sweet sauce is insanely delicious and gives the dish so much flavor you will not even miss those carbs!
  • Protein: Swap out the beef for chicken or shrimp if that’s what you have handy.  Also try Chicken Chow Mein or Shrimp Stir fry for great tasting recipes your family will go crazy over.
  • Veggies only: Leave out the meat for a delicious vegetarian version of this meal.  For more details on how to create the BEST veggie Lo Mein be sure to read my 20 Minute Vegetable Lo Mein recipe.  Easiest Vegetable Stir Fry is a great recipe to check out too!

Can You Make Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein Ahead?

Yes! This is a fantastic recipe to make ahead as part of your family’s meal prepping!  Allow it to cool completely and store in an airtight container.  It will remain good in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.  Or, freeze it for up to 6 months.  Thaw in the refrigerator then heat on a skillet until warm throughout.

  1. I loved the flavors in this dish and have moved it into my favorites file. I will definitely be making this again. Kudos to anyone who can prepare this in 20 minutes. First you need to buy all the vegetables pre-cut to make that time line. The lo mein noodles only take three minutes to cook so I ended up sautéing the broccoli for five minutes before sautéing the beef. I have to control my carbs so I will cut the noodles in half the next time I prepare this.

Hi, Alyssa! My wife & I tried this recipe today and really enjoyed it. It is not too difficult to put together and the flank steak came out so tender! The oriental sauce is just the right touch, and not so much that it turns the dish into a dessert. Thanks for the good recipe!

Tried this tonight and we loved it! Based on other reviewers comments, I cut back the brown sugar to 2 tablespoons and I was pleased with the results. I think there’s lots of things you could do to tweak to make it your own. I like onions so I would probably add while cooking meat next time. Num!!

Just made your Broccoli Beef LoMein. I added red bell pepper and mushroomd because I wanted a vegetarian version this time. I also found myself out of hoisin sauce and used some oyster sauce and a splash of dry sherry. IDidn’t know what to expect but it turned out fantastic!! Thank you for this delicious recipe!

Love your low / no- sodium recipes ! I really wished you had the nutritional listings for how much sodium each dish has in it per serving !

This was my first time ever making beef lo mein. Oh my, it was delicious! It was so easy to make too. Definitely a keeper. Thanks!

    1. AW! You are so sweet! Thank you so much! I really appreciate it and am so happy to have you following along with me! Thank you for choosing one of my recipes to make! XOXO

    1. Hoisin sauce is a sweet, spicy, dark red sauce made from soybeans, vinegar, sugar, garlic, and various spices, widely used in southern Chinese cooking. You will be able to find this sauce in the oriental isle at the grocery store. It is a popular sauce and a must for this recipe. Hope that helps and you can find it! XOXO

Once again, this meal has saved the day. I discovered this recipe here about, oh I’d say, 6 months ago… maybe longer. Since then, I’ve made it for the family numerous times and it is ALWAYS a favourite! Sometimes we change or add vegetables (mushrooms, red bell pepper, you name it!) and we’v even used chicken instead of beef. Each time it comes out amazing as this recipe is highly adaptable to pretty much whatever you have in the veggie drawer and works great with beef, chicken, or pork. Seitan works great as well! The sauce is the absolute champion of this recipe and needs absolutely no tweaking or changes whatsoever. It has the right amount of heat, its bursting with flavour, and this dish will always have a place in the “family cookbook”. Thank you so much!

  9. This looks like a recipe I would love to try but I have a few problems with it. I live in a very small town with only one grocery store and it does not carry an reduced-sodium soy sauce, sesame oil, or hoisen sauce. Heck, I don’t even know what that is! So can you recommend substitutes for those things?

    1. Those ingredients are usually down the asian isle in the grocery store or somewhere near the sauces. I hope you are able to find them to make this recipe. You are welcome to substitute them all but it will alter the taste on this recipe. Thank you for following along with me! I hope you are able to find the things you are looking for! XOXO

I made this tonight. So good! I did add 1 teaspoon cornstarch to the sauce so that it would cling to the pasta as recommended by another reviewer. So quick and easy!

Made this but I doubled the recipe. It was so good that everything was eaten up by 4 people. It’s a keeper, especially since it’s SO easy.
