A Reader’s Review

It’s a keeper!!! Absolutely delicious, will definitely be using this spice mixture again. My husband said it’s the best chilli I’ve made (we’ve been together 33 years).

Why This Beats the Store-Bought Stuff

  • Better Than the Packet: No fillers, no strange ingredients, just pure spices that taste fresh and more flavorful.
  • Custom Heat Level: Make it mild, medium, or hot. YOU control the spice!
  • One Mix, Many Meals: Great not just for chili, but also tacos, fajitas, soups, roasted veggies, popcorn, roasted nuts, fries, and more.
  • Budget-Friendly & Big Batch Ready: Skip the store-bought packets and save money while always having a jar ready in your pantry.

  • Use fresh spices. Dried herbs and spices don’t technically spoil, but once they’ve expired, they lose their potency and make food taste flat.
  • Adjust the heat. If you prefer less spice, simply reduce or omit the cayenne pepper. If you want an extra kick, add red pepper flakes or increase the cayenne for that satisfying burn.

How to Make Homemade Chili Seasoning

My homemade chili seasoning recipe comes together super quickly and easily. First things first, gather all your spices and have a small bowl or jar ready.

  1. Add Ingredients: In a small bowl, combine the chili powder, paprika, oregano, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Then, mix well: Use a small whisk or spoon to blend everything together, then store in an airtight container.

How Much Seasoning Does This Recipe Make?

  • Per Pound of Meat: The general rule is usually two tablespoons of seasoning per pound of meat.
  • Store Bought Packet Equivalent: You can use 2½ to 3 tablespoons to match one store bought chili seasoning packet.
  • Batch Yield: This recipe makes just over four tablespoons. One recipe of this chili seasoning is typically enough to flavor chili for 6-8 people.

Chili Seasoning

This homemade chili seasoning mix is bold, smoky, and perfectly balanced. Quick to make with pantry spices, it’s the secret to the best chili every time!
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 6 people

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, stir together 2 tablespoons chili powder, 1 tablespoon paprika, 1 tablespoon oregano, 1 teaspoon cumin, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, ¼ teaspoon cayenne, 1 teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper.
  • Store in an airtight container.

Notes

Store it right. Keep seasoning in an airtight jar at room temperature in a cool, dry place. Never above the stove where heat and steam can dull flavor. Stored properly, it stays fresh for 6–12 months, so it’s worth making a double or triple batch.

  2. Do I understand the correctly, in order to make this Chili Seasoning from scratch, you go to Target and purchase their Chili Power/Seasoning and add a few more ingredients and then you are done?

    1. I didn’t see Target Chili Seasoning on the list of ingredients…Just a bunch of spices that most of us have in our cabinets and taste so much better than packaged Chili seasoning.

This recipe makes for a great pot of chili. I tried it last night and enjoyed it.

I have to agree with James re: the number of ads. 20+ on a single page is wild!

Haven’t tried the recipe yet, but can you possibly get any more advertisements on one page? Holy crap, it’s so bad I have to close it.
