How to Make Salisbury Steak Casserole

This dish reminds me of my dad. He is a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy. He loves the original Salisbury steak recipe. I love how this one you can make it all in one pan. It makes prep and cleanup easy.

  1. Prep: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit, then heat a large, oven-safe, deep skillet over medium-high heat on the stove. Add the ground beef to the skillet, season with salt and pepper, and cook until mostly browned. It will finish cooking later.
  2. Cook: Drain the fat and remove the cooked beef. Add the butter, diced onion, and mushrooms, then cook until tender, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Combine: Add the garlic to the skillet, then cook for one minute. Whisk the flour into the melted butter and vegetables to create a paste.
  4. Whisk: Slowly whisk in the beef broth to create a smooth gravy sauce.
  5. Stir: Stir in the cooked meat, Worcestershire sauce, and vinegar, then remove the skillet from heat.
  6. Bake: Spread the potatoes evenly over the veggie and meat mixture, then top with the cubed butter. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until the potatoes are golden brown on top and the casserole is heated through. Remove from the oven, and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Salisbury Steak Casserole Tips and Variations

I love how simple and delicious this recipe is. It is easy to adjust to suit your taste and dietary preferences.

  • Protein: You can use ground turkey for a lighter dish.ย
  • Potatoes: You can use frozen hashbrowns instead of mashed potatoes; just spread them over the surface of the casserole, put the cubed butter over the top, and bake according to the instructions.
  • Gluten-Free Option: I use a roux method to make the gravy sauce, which uses flour to thicken the sauce. If you need a gluten-free option, leave out the flour, whisk the broth in with the vegetables, and thicken the sauce with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch.

How to Store Leftover Casserole

This dish makes the best leftovers because all of the flavors have time to meld beautifully. Plus, your kids will love having them to warm up after school, and you can also heat them up for quick and easy lunches throughout the week.

  • Fridge: You can easily store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.ย
  • Freezer: You can also store them in the freezer for up to 2 months. I recommend storing them in servings of about 1 ยฝ cups, so theyโ€™re easier to reheat.
