What is Taco Seasoning Mix Made of?

Taco Seasoning is made up of simple spices that, when they are mixed together, make the best flavor. Check out the recipe card at the bottom of the post for all of the exact measurements.

  • Chili Powder: This gives it some kick. Add more if you like your seasoning extra spicy!
  • Garlic Powder: The garlic powder complements all of the other flavors without being too overpowering.
  • Onion Powder: This is a subtle onion flavor that really stands out.
  • Dried Oregano: The oregano brings in a spicy but sweet flavoring.
  • Paprika: Paprika has a smokey flavor and helps add color to the taco seasoning.
  • Ground Cumin: This unique flavored seasoning adds lots of flavor with a little spice.
  • Salt and Black Pepper: These enhance all of the flavors in the recipe.

How to Make Your Own Taco Seasoning

You can also change the flavor up to have more or less heat depending on your preference. That’s the beauty of homemade seasonings, you can customize them to be however you want!

  1. Mix spices together: Combine all the seasonings together in a bowl.
  2. Store: Place the mixture in an airtight container.

How much homemade taco seasoning equals one packet?

A standard store-bought packets of taco seasoning holds about 2 tablespoons of seasoning.

How much taco seasoning for 1 pound of meat?

I use about 2 tablespoons in one pound of ground turkey or ground beef. This is such a simple recipe and it all comes together quick and easy for you to make several taco dishes! The recipe can easily be doubled and use more or less to taste.

Tip: I also like to add 1/2 cup of water to the meat and seasonings to make the meat more moist.

How long does taco seasoning last?

This is the best part! When you store your seasoning, make sure to keep it in a cool, dry place in an airtight container and it will last up to 6 months.

The absolute best taco seasoning so much better than the store brought stuff. I make it as is and its perfection!!

  4. I LOVE your taco seasoning recipe!! Thank you for enhancing my life with this share! I will be trying your other recipes! Laura P

  5. I really enjoy making my own season mixes. I make rubs and sauces for bbq and smoking and just about anything else I can conjure up. The hardest part of the process is the right amount of ingredients and the amount of each, you nailed it here. I added 1/8 th tsp of jalapeño powder for heat but cayenne would work just as well. One of the comments you had was adding cornstarch, one tablespoon is perfect along with around 1/4 cup water. Just about everyone has these basic spices in their pantry. Nice job, thanks

  6. I too ran out of taco seasoning and I thought taco’s were not on the menu-thank you for saving the night. The whole family loved it and I put the seasoning on shrimp too! Thanks!!

  7. I didn’t realize I was out of taco seasoning. I googled it and found this recipe. OMG. These were the best tacos ever!!! Thank you!

  8. What kind of chili powder do you use? They are all so different, so it would make a difference in the final flavor of the mix. Thanks, love your recipes and look forward to trying them.

    1. You are totally right. I like to use the chili powder from McCormick but again the difference in flavor may be different for you! Enjoy! XOXO

My husband and I loved your taco seasoning recipe better than any we have ever had!
The only suggestion I would make is to do only half the pepper if children don’t care for too spicy food
    Thank you

  10. I love making tacos the way my mother did with her types of Mexican/Irish hot sauce which was the icing on the cake , she would take 1 jalapeño/1 avocado / 1/2 can of cranberry/ 1/4 cup onion and garlic sliced up/parsley/teaspoon of salt and sugar. Mix all together in blender with 1 tomato ? and 1/3 cup olive oil.
You will have the best Mexican/ Irish hot sauce ever that you can spread on top of your tacos. And since I’m Mexican and Irish , I’ve always wanted to open up my own Mexican -Irish restaurant and call it “I Rish I was Mexican “

  11. I tried this recipe when the kids wanted tacos and I had everything for the tacos except taco seasoning. All three kids ate it up! They even ate them the next day as leftovers (something they never do). My 11 year old, who is a very picky eater, said she could taste the difference between the store bought and this and liked this one way way better. So now it’s the only thing I use to season taco meat. If it makes my picky eaters happy, it makes me happy. I can’t thank you enough!

  12. I just tried this tonight for beef burritos. It was delicious! I followed your advice and added a 1/2 cup of water. Thanks!

    1. That is perfect! I am so glad that it worked out for you! Thank you so much for sharing! XOXO
