Slow Cooker Honey Teriyaki Chicken

This recipe is so easy to throw into your slow cooker and the honey teriyaki flavor is our of this world!  The chicken cooks to perfection and will be one of the best things that you will make!


My 7 year old is the pickiest eater that you will meet.  We keep hoping that he will grow out of it, but he keeps getting older and still doesn’t like a lot of foods.  We at least have him try a couple of bites of what we eat, but he usually gags it down.  If you ask him what his favorite meal on the blog is, he will say this teriyaki chicken.   And if he likes it I am convinced that the world will like it! 😉

So I am sure that you can imagine how often this Teriyaki Chicken gets made in this house.  But I am not complaining because it takes a matter of minutes to throw into the slow cooker and it is amazing.  As I was making it the other day, I wondered how much better honey would make the recipe.  This simple added ingredient took it to a whole different level.

honeyteriyaki3  I think this is the best thing that I have ever made in my slow cooker.  The honey added some sweetness to the teriyaki and made it incredible.  My favorite part of cooking this in the slow cooker is the chicken.  It just shreds apart because it is so tender and melts in your mouth.

The honey teriyaki glaze is perfect on top of this tender chicken.  The flavor is incredible.  This meal is picky eater approved and I know it will be a meal that your family will love!  You will make it again and again!

Slow Cooker Honey Teriyaki Chicken

This recipe is so easy to throw into your slow cooker and the honey teriyaki flavor is our of this world! The chicken cooks to perfection and will be one of the best things that you will make!
Serves: 4-6
  • 4 boneless chicken breasts, about 2 pounds
  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup honey
  • ¼ cup rice wine vinegar
  • ¼ cup onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • ¾ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ cup water
  • 3 Tablespoons Cornstarch
  • Optional garnish: green onions, sesame seeds
  1. Spray your slow cooker with cooking spray and place the chicken breasts in the bottom. In a small bowl whisk the soy sauce, honey, rice wine vinegar, onion, garlic, pepper and ginger. Pour over the chicken breasts.
  2. Cook on high for 3-4 hours or low for 4-5 or until chicken is cooked throughout and shreds easily. Once the chicken is cooked, remove with a slotted spoon and shred on a plate.
  3. Pour the sauce into a medium sauce pan. In a small bowl, whisk together the water and cornstarch. Slowly whisk into the sauce on medium high heat. Continue to whisk and let it boil until the honey teriyaki sauce starts to thicken. About 2 minutes.
  4. Add the chicken back to the slow cooker and pour the sauce on top stirring to coat. Serve over rice and garnish if desired.

  7. This was definitely a good sauce, but I was a little shocked at how little time it took to cook. I luckily had a short shift today and checked my chicken and just about 3 1/2 hours on low and it was already chewy. I only used about 2lbs of chicken too. Might need to double sauce? Anyone else run into this?

  8. Tried this recipe today. It tasted very good, but I would reduce the amount of honey if I made it again. It ended up being a little sweeter than your typical teriyaki sauce.

  10. I made this last night and it was amazing.
    I would love to be one of those crock pot all the time people but I am gone 12 hours a day between work and the gym , and well life.

    So when I got home last night, I cooked the chicken in the oven and the sauce on the stove. Came out amazing!!! I ended up doubling the amount of chicken because I felt like there was just to much sauce. But this is a great go to recipe to add to my rotation.

  11. Made this tonight and it was delicious! Everyone in the family went back for seconds. I will have to double it next time so we have some leftovers! I didn’t have any rice wine vinegar or chicken breast so I use apple cider vinegar and boneless chicken thighs and it still came out wonderful. can’t wait to try more of your recipes!

  14. Cooked much faster then the recipe stated. I love soy sauce but this was way too salty for me. First recipe from this site that was not a big hit for me, but that’s my personal taste. I may make it again with a few modifications.

    • Super simple, but waaaay too much soy sauce- we had a hard time eating this. I would only put half the soy and add more water for appropriate consistency.

      • I agree about the soy and we used low sodium. I would get make the vinegar and substitute some chicken broth. I added brown sugar after I put the sauce in to mellow out the acidity…maybe 1/4 cup or 1/8th

  15. I just finished making it. I followed the directions to a T. It was very good. The one problem that I had was there just wasn’t enough sauce. I thought it would be saucier. I bought a loaf of bread but there was no need for it. My family and I are dippers lol. I must say, for the 4/5 hours that I cooked it, the smell in my house was incredible. I will definitely try it again, but maybe add more water to the cornstarch?

    In the “ingredient list” did you mean soy sauce or teriyaki sauce. I made it according to the directions (using soy sauce) and it wasn’t very good. Are soy sauce and teriyaki sauce the same thing?????

    • No they are different. This is a homemade teriyaki sauce that uses soy sauce as the base. I am sorry it didn’t turn out for you!

    I am making this as I post. I wanted a different recipe for some chicken and saw this on pinterest. I have a frozen chicken that I put in my crockpot and doubled the rest of the ingredients. It smells amazing already! Thanks so much for the recipe.

  22. So I made a rookie mistake and didn’t read the directions completely before mixing all the ingredients together and putting it in the crockpot will it turn out horrible if I put in the corn starch with everything? Eeek!

  23. Very easy recipe to make. My son loves Taste Of Japans teriyaki chicken so he really likes the flavor of your recipe over rice. Also topped it off with Yum Yum sauce.

  31. This wasn’t bad. Edible, but probably won’t make again. The flavours could be more balanced. The salty soy sauce and the sweet honey overwhelmed the dish. I added some sesame oil, which helped a little. If I were to redo, I would substitute some of the soy sauce and honey for a bit of orange juice.

  32. Made this tonight, pretty good and so easy! I think I would use low sodium soy sauce next time though. It is a bit saltier than I like, and I really love salt.

    Just wondering: In the directions you mention to whisk the first few ingredients together, including onion. Did you mean the green onion? I don’t see any other type of onion on the list of ingredients so I wanted to be sure.


  34. is there a way that this can be cooked for longer? I work during the day and would like to put this on to come home to at night. Something like 8 hours? Maybe put double the liquid so it doesn’s dry out?

  35. I don’t have any ground ginger, but do have fresh. Could I substitute?

      This sounds like something I could make ahead, freeze, and then cook when needed. Has anyone tried that yet? It would be like marinating the chicken for a while and would probably increase the cook time, but I’m not sure how long.

    I always use fresh ginger (well, okay, I store it in the freezer) and grind it when I need it.

    I made this for my family tonight. My husband and I loved it as is but my son would have preferred that the sauce not be thickened. I think you could also make it and use the meat without the sauce on a sandwich or lettuce wrap with some crispy vegetables. Thank you for a great recipe.

    I put my chicken breasts frozen. They are juicier & very tender in approx 5 hrs. Be sure they are separated

    This recipe tastes sooooo good! The only things I changed was that I used white vinegar (the only kind I had) and I browned the chicken before placing in the slow cooker so I could chop it instead of shredding. Added the corn starch mixture right into the slow cooker with chopped chicken until thickened. So good!
