Ingredients for Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein

This list of ingredients may look long, but don’t worry, you probably have most of these items on hand.  Traditional asian ingredients like hoisin sauce, soy sauce, and sesame oil are staples you will use again and again for delicious asian flavors.  This Garlic and Beef Broccoli Lo Mein also uses a little bit of garlic, brown sugar, and pepper give the best spice to the sauce!

  • Lo mein noodles or spaghetti noodles: Either will be delicious!
  • Broccoli florets: Add to boiling water in the last 5 minutes of cooking the pasta.
  • Olive oil: Coat skillet with oil before adding in steak to cook it perfectly.
  • Flank steak: sliced against the grain
  • Garlic cloves: Minced will give a great flavor to the steak.
  • Carrot: Shredded carrots quickly cook in the skillet with garlic after steak is done.
  • Brown sugar: Measure packed for a great rich sweetness in the sauce.

Variations of Lo Mein

Traditionally Lo Mein is a stir fry meal that is made up of noodles tossed with veggies or meats and an asian sauce.  The great thing about it is that you can customize this incredible mixture of flavors and textures depending on what veggies and meats you have on hand.  Variations will make this meal more convenient and fast, while still giving the same great tasting results!

  • No noodles: Leave out the noodles for a simple veggie and meat stir fry.  The thick and sweet sauce is insanely delicious and gives the dish so much flavor you will not even miss those carbs!
  • Protein: Swap out the beef for chicken or shrimp if that’s what you have handy.  Also try Chicken Chow Mein or Shrimp Stir fry for great tasting recipes your family will go crazy over.
  • Veggies only: Leave out the meat for a delicious vegetarian version of this meal.  For more details on how to create the BEST veggie Lo Mein be sure to read my 20 Minute Vegetable Lo Mein recipe.  Easiest Vegetable Stir Fry is a great recipe to check out too!

Can You Make Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein Ahead?

Yes! This is a fantastic recipe to make ahead as part of your family’s meal prepping!  Allow it to cool completely and store in an airtight container.  It will remain good in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.  Or, freeze it for up to 6 months.  Thaw in the refrigerator then heat on a skillet until warm throughout.

My husband and I make this ALL the time. It is easily one of our most favorite recipes…and so easy to make!! The sauce is the perfect balance of sweet and spicy and it uses ingredients we almost always have in our pantry/refrigerator. Thanks for an awesome recipe!!

  2. I’ve had this recipe in my saved stash for a lil while now and decided to make it today!!!! Oh emm geee😳😁!!!! Delish!!! Most def will be making again but with a little less brown sugar, personal preference!!! But a great dish and very simple!!❤️👍🏾

Loved this recipe. I did a few things differently. I sautéed my broccoli, instead of boiling it. I seasoned the meat with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and ginger powder. Just a small sprinkle on both sides, and let it rest for an hour. I also didn’t realize we were out of hoisin sauce until I was making it so we had to skip that ingredient. I used about half as much brown sugar, still thought it was a little sweet but absolutely delicious. Definitely will make this again (and use hoisin next time).

    1. I also cut back the brown sugar to about 2 TBSP and added a couple TBSP of molasses. I felt it gave more depth of flavor. I used a TBSP of gochujang versus red pepper flakes. Doubled the sauce!i

    2. Sometimes if I’m out of hoisin, I’ll mix soy sauce and ketchup as a substitute. You can also control how sweet the sauce is that way.

Excellent. I did make double sauce, and glad that I did. My husband was eating it with a spoon, like soup.

My husband liked it but I thought it was too sweet and so will add does sugar next time. Also, the broccoli seemed to be over cooked with give minutes left of the pasta cooking time do would need to adjust to maybe last 3 minutes so it’s still crisp and not soggy.

We love this recipe. I use less brown sugar. That’s just our personal preference. Made it for family and the loved it. Said it was spicy, but it doesn’t seem spicy to us. However we are used to eating really spicy Mexican food. Enjoy!

Made this recipe yesterday. I posted a picture of the ingredients all together. Than I posted a picture of the finished dish on Facebook. It got some good attention. Several people asked for your recipe. Of course I shared your link and past it along. This dish is amazing and loaded with flavor. I give it five starts. My family and I loved it 🙂

  9. This is a great dish! Great flavour and SO easy to put together. My husband asked me to
add green pepper and mushrooms…I didn’t want to for the first try…but I gave in and it was
delicious! This is a new “staple” recipe in our house!

  10. Will round steak work? I want to make this really bad but round steak is on sale & I am on tight budget.

  11. My entire family of 4 loved the recipe! Delicious and enough for dinner a second night! I used 14 oz. of lo mein, doubled the sauce, and 16 oz. of chicken and there was not enough meat. Everyone asked for more meat! I cooked the broccoli for only 3 minutes, but it had to sit for a bit before I was ready to add it. It melted into the meal, i.e. you could only see green dots and not actual florets remained. The kids really liked it and didn’t fuss about “broccoli” so I guess that was good, but I felt like I should have blanched the broccoli. I also added red pepper and that was a great addition! Highly recommend!

  12. So excited to try this tonight. Debating if I should use the spaghetti noodles or I also bought UDON noodles. Help please 🙏🏻

  13. Hello Alyssa,

Can you tell me the difference between low mein noodles and sphagetti noodles?
And where can I find low mein noodles at the grocery?
