Ingredients for Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein

This list of ingredients may look long, but don’t worry, you probably have most of these items on hand.  Traditional asian ingredients like hoisin sauce, soy sauce, and sesame oil are staples you will use again and again for delicious asian flavors.  This Garlic and Beef Broccoli Lo Mein also uses a little bit of garlic, brown sugar, and pepper give the best spice to the sauce!

Variations of Lo Mein

Traditionally Lo Mein is a stir fry meal that is made up of noodles tossed with veggies or meats and an asian sauce.  The great thing about it is that you can customize this incredible mixture of flavors and textures depending on what veggies and meats you have on hand.  Variations will make this meal more convenient and fast, while still giving the same great tasting results!

  • No noodles: Leave out the noodles for a simple veggie and meat stir fry.  The thick and sweet sauce is insanely delicious and gives the dish so much flavor you will not even miss those carbs!
  • Protein: Swap out the beef for chicken or shrimp if that’s what you have handy.  Also try Chicken Chow Mein or Shrimp Stir fry for great tasting recipes your family will go crazy over.
  • Veggies only: Leave out the meat for a delicious vegetarian version of this meal.  For more details on how to create the BEST veggie Lo Mein be sure to read my 20 Minute Vegetable Lo Mein recipe.  Easiest Vegetable Stir Fry is a great recipe to check out too!

Can You Make Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein Ahead?

Yes! This is a fantastic recipe to make ahead as part of your family’s meal prepping!  Allow it to cool completely and store in an airtight container.  It will remain good in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.  Or, freeze it for up to 6 months.  Thaw in the refrigerator then heat on a skillet until warm throughout.

  1. This sounds delish and we will certainly try it (I have all the ingredients) but there is no way I can wash & chop three cups broc, slice 8 ounces of steak, peel & shred a carrot, and measure everything out in five minutes flat. That must be your superpower because there is no way I can do all that, that fast. Was that a typo? Surely you meant 10 minutes, if not 15. I must be doing something wrong because this happens to me all the time. I pick a recipe because I want something super fast and then when I go to actually do the prep work & measuring, I have to laugh at myself for being SO SLOW. LOL! It never works for me so I add 10-15 minutes for everything. The only other way is buy everything prewashed & chopped/sliced or hire a sous chef.

  2. This is So delicious! My family loves it. I add some cornstarch to it though because it’s a little thin in my opinion.

    1. You can make this mixture for the hoisin sauce
1 cup (minus 3 tablespoons) thick barbecue sauce, 3 tablespoons molasses, 4 teaspoons soy sauce, 4 teaspoons yeast extract, and 2 1/2 teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder.

      OR

Soy sauce, prunes or dark brown sugar are great replacements for hoisin sauce.

I don’t normally leave comments/reviews on recipes.. but, this is honestly my favorite dish!! I have to force myself to stop eating before I explode! SO GOOD! I love the sauce

This recipe was excellent! I sauteed half an onion, two peppers, and some mushrooms and added it to the mixture. The sauce is fantastic. Wicked easy to make.

Added some Thai red pepper paste to the sauce and used garlic pepper instead of regular. Added bean sprouts and water chestnuts too.

  6. Made this tonight for dinner. I added mushrooms & waterchestnuts too. An unusually sweeter taste to the lomein, but good! I may tweak a little next time – I really loved the Hoisin flavor so I may add a little more of it next time and maybe a little less brown sugar.
I did not read the spaghetti quantity and cooked the whole box when it should have been half! That error = not enough sauce! I hurried and whisked up another batch. Glad it was easy to make.
    Thank you for the recipe!

I need a lot of these quick meals as we eat late according to schedules . Also can you give me some crockpot recipes please. Thank you sooo much

  8. 4 stars
Great recipe. I did have to cut back on the brown sugar as it was too sweet. I added water chestnuts and sugar snap peas. Will definitely make this again.

  9. 5 stars
This recipe is delicious! I have been making it for awhile now and it is one of my very very picky daughter’s favorite homecooked meal. (she usually wants takeout) And once you buy the ingredients the first time you can get a couple of meals out of them with the exception of having to buy more steak.

      1. I made it with left over pork chops. It was delicious. I’m looking forward to making it again with snow peas and water chestnuts.
