20 Minute Garlic Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein

Quick and easy meals to make for your family are always top priority.  I especially love creating easy meals that don’t require a lot of effort, but are absolutely delish!  For example, this Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein is a tried and true family favorite of ours. The beef and broccoli coated in the sticky and sweet sauce is a dinner we all crave often!

This is THEE perfect meal to make for your family and especially for the busy back to school time. I put this meal together in under 20 minutes without rushing around.  It is simple and easy to throw together at the last minute or to make ahead.  This is the perfect filling and satisfying dinner at home and I know that you are going to love it as much as we did!

Ingredients for Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein

This list of ingredients may look long, but don’t worry, you probably have most of these items on hand.  Traditional asian ingredients like hoisin sauce, soy sauce, and sesame oil are staples you will use again and again for delicious asian flavors.  This Garlic and Beef Broccoli Lo Mein also uses a little bit of garlic, brown sugar, and pepper give the best spice to the sauce!

  • Lo mein noodles or spaghetti noodles: Either will be delicious!
  • Broccoli florets: Add to boiling water in the last 5 minutes of cooking the pasta.
  • Olive oil: Coat skillet with oil before adding in steak to cook it perfectly.
  • Flank steak: sliced against the grain
  • Garlic cloves: Minced will give a great flavor to the steak.
  • Carrot: Shredded carrots quickly cook in the skillet with garlic after steak is done.
  • Brown sugar: Measure packed for a great rich sweetness in the sauce.
  • Soy sauce: Reduced-sodium adds a perfect amount of saltiness.
  • Hoisin sauce: Adds thick glaze-like texture and sweet and salty flavor.
  • Sesame oil: Combine with soy sauce, hoisin, ginger, and seasonings for the perfect sticky-sweet sauce.
  • Ground ginger: Warm spicy flavor that is a little sweet.
  • Crushed red pepper flakes: Adds a bit of heat.
  • Pepper: To taste!
  • Green Onion and Sesame Seeds: Add these on top for garnish if desired. Adds great flavor as well!

Let’s Make Lo Mein!

Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein is so easy to put together with just 2 pans and 20 minutes.  It is a restaurant quality meal that you can make at home.

  1. Cook pasta: In a large pot with boiling water, cook the noodles according to package directions. Add the broccoli the last 5 minutes of cooking and let them cook until tender. Drain the noodles and broccoli.
  2. Cook steak: While the pasta is cooking, add olive oil to a medium sized skillet. Cook the steak until no longer pink. Add the garlic, and carrots and cook for a minute more.
  3. Mix sauce: In a small bowl whisk together the brown sugar soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, ginger, red pepper and pepper.
  4. Toss everything together: Add the spaghetti to the skillet and pour the sauce on top and toss until incorporated.

Variations of Lo Mein

Traditionally Lo Mein is a stir fry meal that is made up of noodles tossed with veggies or meats and an asian sauce.  The great thing about it is that you can customize this incredible mixture of flavors and textures depending on what veggies and meats you have on hand.  Variations will make this meal more convenient and fast, while still giving the same great tasting results!

  • No noodles: Leave out the noodles for a simple veggie and meat stir fry.  The thick and sweet sauce is insanely delicious and gives the dish so much flavor you will not even miss those carbs!

Can You Make Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein Ahead?

Yes! This is a fantastic recipe to make ahead as part of your family’s meal prepping!  Allow it to cool completely and store in an airtight container.  It will remain good in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.  Or, freeze it for up to 6 months.  Thaw in the refrigerator then heat on a skillet until warm throughout.

  • While the pasta is cooking, add olive oil to a medium sized skillet. Cook the steak until no longer pink.
  • Add the garlic, and carrots and cook for a minute more.
  • In a small bowl whisk together the brown sugar soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, ginger, red pepper and pepper.
  • Add the spaghetti to the skillet and pour the sauce on top and toss until incorporated.
  • Garnish with chopped green onion and sesame seeds if desired.

    I absolutely LOVE this recipe! I make it atleast once every two weeks! I usually double the sauce because I love sauce and use angel hair instead of spaghetti!

    This is the ONLY recipe for asian food I’ve ever found that actually tastes like what I’d have in a good restaurant. I’ve made this a few times now. It is now my boyfriends favorite meal.
    Few things to make it perfect, for my taste.
    1) add one yellow or sweet onion. Cook it at the same time as the carrots. Cut into slices, not diced, so it’s easy to pick up with chop sticks
    2) cook the carrots and onions BEFORE the meat. If you do the meat first like in the recipe, the meat will be overcooked and chewy. Also, this allows you to actually cook the carrots and onions so they are no longer hard. For me, I am allergic to raw carrots but not cooked carrots (pollen-fruit allergy), so carrots must be cooked
    3) double the sauce
    4) trust the noodles and broccoli Instructions. I use the pack of lo mein noodles that come in bundles of three, they take 4 mins to cook. So put plenty of water in the pot and actually take to boiling. Add the broccoli, then one minute later add the noodles and cook.
    5) top with green onions! To take it a step further, cut up the green onions and save the whiter crunchier parts for a garnish, and cook the darker part with the onion and carrot. For ANOTHER step further, enhance the strength of the green onion by putting it in a bowl full of water and putting in the freezer. Take it out just before the water freezes. Almost freezing the onions in water is the secret to making VERY flavorful green onion garnish.

    1. You would probably be ok leaving it out. It is just a thick sauce and provides good flavor. You can make a homemade similar sauce with this recipe: 3/4 cup barbecue sauce
      3 tbsp. molasses
      1 tbsp. soy sauce
      1/2 tbsp. Chinese five spice powder

    We LOVE this recipe. We have used flank steak, chicken and shrimp when making it. We like using the different proteins in this recipe so I guess we will try pork next. One of our favorites we have tried. The sauce really makes this delicious.

  5. Excellent! I’ve made it several times by now ..just adjusting whatever ingredients I have on hand. I’ve used chick as well. I add a 1/4 c water to 1T corn starch to thicken it slightly as I like it coated a bit more. I also sauté my broc instead of boiling it. I used No Yolk Stir Fry Noodles ..excellent!! Great way to use up veggies on their last legs. I used cabbage, carrots, broc, celery, scallions, reg diced onion, grated ginger & grated garlic & a ribeye steak I got on sale for 5.00. A VERY cheap meal!!

    I don’t know how anyone does the prep in just 5 minutes, but the end result is definitely worth the time! I add extra meat and broccoli. Since the lo mein only takes 4 minutes, I cook the broccoli and lo mein at the same time. We love the balance of sweet and hot. This has become one of our favorite meals.

    Made this for dinner tonight and it was wonderful! The only thing that I might change next time would be to only let the broccoli stay in with the pasta about two minutes. By the time I put it back in the pan and heated everything up it was cooking down quite a bit. I used a round roast and use the velveting process to tenderize it. Thanks so much it was wonderful!

    Super yum!!! I doubled the sauce ingredients all but the brown sugar. Second time making this and will definitely make again!
