These Swedish Meatballs are a top favorite recipe on the site for a reasonโ€”juicy meatballs, rich creamy gravy, and have SO MUCH FLAVOR. Theyโ€™re easy to make and way better than IKEAโ€™s (yes, really!).

  1. Fan Favorite: With 400+ five-star reviews, these meatballs are actually the best.
  2. Creamy Sauce: The secret lies in the sauce. It’s rich, creamy, and full of flavor thanks to classic spices. You will be licking the spoon, I promise.
  3. Better than IKEA: Ever had IKEA Swedish Meatballs? These ones are so easy and WAY better!

Ingredients in Swedish Meatballs

A top down shot of the ingredients for the swedish meatballs.
  • Use lean ground beef: It helps keep the meatballs tender without making them greasy.
  • Spices: Trust me, nutmeg and allspice are what make these Swedish meatballs special. Donโ€™t skip them if you want that authentic flavor.
  • No Panko Breadcrumbs? No Problem: If youโ€™re out of breadcrumbs, make a panade by blending two pieces of bread into crumbs and mixing with 1/4 cup of milk to form a paste. Add an egg, mix it all up, and youโ€™ll get the same great texture in your meatballs.

  • Go for low-sodium beef broth: This keeps the creay gravy from turning too salty and gives you more control over the final flavor.

Skip the Pork- Here’s Why

Some people like to use a mix of beef and pork for Swedish meatballs, and while the pork can add a little extra tenderness, Iโ€™ve found that itโ€™s not enough of a difference to justify the extra cost of buying 2 kinds of meat. The rich, creamy sauce and yummy flavors in the meat make these meatballs turn out perfectly tender and delicious with just ground beef!

How to Make Swedish Meatballs

These will come together quickly and cook in about 30 minutes total, so dinner is fast and easy!

  1. Combine: In a medium-sized bowl, combine ground beef, panko, parsley, allspice, nutmeg, onion, garlic powder, pepper, salt, and egg. Mix until combined.
  2. Roll Meatballs: Roll into 12 large meatballs or 20 small meatballs.
  3. Cook: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter. Add the meatballs and cook for 7-8 minutes, turning continuously until brown on each side and cooked through. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil.
  4. Make the sauce: Add 4 Tablespoons butter and flour to the skillet and whisk until it turns brown.
  5. Whisk: Slowly stir in beef broth and heavy cream and whisk to combine.
  6. Add meatballs and simmer: Add Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard and bring to a simmer until sauce starts to thicken. Salt and pepper to taste. Add the meatballs back to the skillet and simmer for another 1-2 minutes. Serve over egg noodles or mashed potatoes.

Variations to Try

Can You Freeze Swedish Meatballs?

Yes! This recipe is perfect for doubling and freezing for later. Hereโ€™s how to do it without losing flavor or texture:

  • Cooked Meatballs: Let them cool, then freeze them on a baking sheet until solid (2โ€“4 hours). Transfer to a freezer bag or an airtight container. Theyโ€™ll keep up to 3 months. Reheat in the microwave or warm them up in the sauce.
  • Skip Freezing the Sauce: Creamy sauces donโ€™t freeze wellโ€”they can separate. For best results, make the gravy fresh when youโ€™re ready to serve.

This is very similar to my Grandmother Swanson’s recipe, (Yes she was Swedish). Her’s had a bit more onion, a 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder. Also the stock for the sauce was 1/2 f cup beef and 1/2 cup chicken. One important note: The stock used should be UNSALTED. Salt can be added at the end. Grandma got around this by making her own which I only do on occasion.

I love these Swedish meatballs. The only difference is that I bake mine for 20 minutes at 400. This is my go to dish for when I crave SM! โค๏ธ Thank you for the recipe!

I already have a favorite Swedish meatball recipe that I’ve been making for years. So I wasn’t sure the family would like this version and if I’d regret not sticking to my usual. Well, I can say, this is now the family Swedish meatball recipe! So perfect! The sauce was silky and delicious, and the meatballs were juicy and had a lovely flavor. Highly recommend!

Made this meatball recipe several times. We don’t use the sauce part tho. My kids and I take the meatballs (once cooked and cooled) simmer them for 20mins turning frequently in VH Chinese Honey Garlic sauce (my US friends say you don’t have this VH Sauce down there??) Then it’s served on a bed of white Rice. Sooooo good!!

  5. I often cook the meatballs in our smoker. I set them on a piece of foil lined with butcher paper in the smoker to make a cheap and simple ‘casserole dish’.
Then add to sauce and simmer until rest of supper is ready etc

I make this recipe all the time. We love it! Itโ€™s easy, quick and so yummy! So glad I ran across this I guess a year or so ago. Thanks for sharing it!!

ABSOLUTELY the VERY best Swedish meatballs recipe! The only recipe that includes Worcestershire & Dejon. Soya sauce is absolutely not the same. I turned this into a #Keto recipe, by simply omitting the panco.
    Thanks for sharing!

These are very good. My husband requests them all the time. Donโ€™t leave out the spices, they add a lot of flavor.

I have made these several times. They are my favorite meal. My dad canโ€™t have ground beef so I use a pound of ground turkey, a pound of ground pork and double the meatball ingredients and freeze the extras for next time. Canโ€™t wait to make them tonight!

  10. Review update. Made the recipe yesterday for dinner and followed the recipe as written. Great flavor, absolutely delicious! My wife loved it, my sister in law loved it, I loved it! Thank you so much Alyssa for the great recipe! Will definitely make again.

  11. Planning on making this recipe tomorrow. Will write again to let you know how it turns out! I plan on following the recipe as written, sounds delicious.
