Fried Rice Recipe
It is pretty obvious how obsessed with fried rice I am. It was the only thing that I would order growing up and I have always loved it so much! When I was taught all of the secret ways to make it from my Chinese sister in law, I can assure you that it is way better than any takeout you will ever get! Every time we make anything asian inspired we always serve up this fried rice. We have even been known to have fried rice at the Thanksgiving dinner table. We love it that much. It is no shock that it is one of the number one searched recipes here on the blog!
I decided to take it to the next level and add some crispy bacon. Not only that, you fry the veggies in the reserved bacon grease. This has so much amazing flavor. This was so delicious that my family couldn’t get enough of it!
What ingredients go into fried rice?
- 8 ounces of bacon, chopped (can also use ham, spam, shrimp, chicken.)
- 1 small white onion, chopped
- 1 cup frozen peas and carrots
- 3 eggs, lightly beaten
- 3 cups cooked white rice
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
- 2-3 tablespoons soy sauce (to taste)
- green onions, chopped for garnish
How do you make homemade fried rice?
- To start, add your chopped bacon to a medium sized skillet or work. Cook over medium high heat until it is crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain the grease leaving about 1 tablespoon.
- Next, add your chopped onion and frozen peas and carrots and sautรฉ for 1-2 minutes until they are tender.
- Slide your veggies to one side and add the beaten egg to the other side. Scramble the egg until it is cooked through and combine it with the peas and carrots.
- Add cooked rice and bacon back to the skillet and combine. Add in sesame oil and soy sauce to taste. Let it heat through and serve immediately.
Some tips and tricks for making fried rice:
- Use day old cold rice. If you use warm, freshly made rice, your fried rice will most likely turn out soggy. Using day old rice helps to dry out the grains and give the rice a good texture.
- Add some sesame oil for flavoring. I always add sesame oil to my fried rice. This brings out the great asian flavor that we know and love.
What rice is good for fried rice?
Medium to long grain rice works the best. You can use Jasmine rice which will produce fluffy, sturdy grains that won’t clump or fall apart when you are frying. Shorter grain rice tends to be softer and stick together.
Can Basmati Rice be used for fried rice?
Yes! It is also a popular choice with Chinese and Indian cultures.
What dishes go well with fried rice?
- Baked Sweet and Sour Chicken
- Mongolian Beef
- Slow Cooker Cashew Chicken
- Garlic Chicken Stir Fryย
- Korean Ground Beef Stir Fryย

I made this tonight. The only thing I didn’t have was sesame oil but I’ll make sure to buy that for next batch because there will be many more! We absolutely loved it. Thank you for an excellent recipe! It was so quick and easy but most of all it was so delicious ๐๐ This will be my favourite fried rice now.
I followed the recipe to the letter, and it was delicious!
Even I couldn’t mess this up. I like easy, especially when I know it will be good. Thanks!! P.S. you’re cute.
Does it reheat well?
Yes, warm up slowly in the microwave or over the stove top stirring it often.
Loved this recipe! Easy to make and tasty! It will go with almost anything. We had pork dumplings with it. Thanks!
I do not cook. Chef Boyardee is one of my BFFโs. This recipe was easy to make (I was still nervous of course) and absolutely delish! Thank you thank you!!! You have made a fan out of this girl!
Question – have you done this using riced cauliflower before rather than rice? I’m trying to stay fairly low carb when I can so just wanted to put that question out there. Great recipe and I will definitely be trying it at some point VERY soon!!
I have! Here is the recipe: https://therecipecritic.com/cauliflower-fried-rice/. Enjoy and good luck on your health changes!
This recipe is perfect! It has become a top favorite in our household. Thank you so much for posting it!
Made it for my picky family and they loved it! The bacon really made it over the top tasty! Husband also grilled some chicken to go with it. Thank you for a great recipe!
Omgosh the bacon fried rice was amazing!! I didn’t have sesame oil but it didn’t matter!!
Made this and it tasted so yum!
Can I honestly say that being a single man . I have found this recipe very useful for me. I love bacon eggs and rice. This combines them all and at a far cheaper cost than at a take away. I will certainly be trying this for myself. Can I ask is it possible to freeze and use at a later date.
It does not freeze the best but you could always try it and see how well you enjoy it. Thanks for choosing one of my recipes!
I definitely gon’ try this. It looks so easy and delicious โค.. Thumbs up for sharing mummy.
Hi Alyssa, I am enjoying receiving your recipes through email. The easy bacon fried eice looks so delicious; however, I cannot have the bad oils, canola, vegetable or any soy. Is there anything I can substitute for the soy sauce?
Soy sauce substitute is Tamari sauce. I am not sure its nutritional value but that is the closest in taste and flavor. Hope that helps! XOXO
Iโm not sure if youโre still looking for a soy sauce replacement, but coconut aminos is a great substitute.
Re: the Bacon Fried Rice
I’ve been making Bacon Fried Rice since I was a teenager. It was always one of my favs, and we usually had bacon at home. Now, I have two girls, and if I make it for dinner I have one girl who doesn’t like carrots, one who doesn’t like peas, and onions make me gassy, so it can be a real challenge! I often sub brocolli (in smallish pieces), and use fresh. Frozen mixed veges is what most people use, as it is easy and saves all of the cutting up time for the carrots….for the peas, you don’t have to open all those pods. Frozen is fine, but I prefer fresh, if at all possible. Fried rice is very forgiving of substitutes; you could use any meat you happen to have on hand, leave out the onion or put it in, you can use any smallish pieces of really any veggie; corn, calliflower, firm pumpkin….anything, but traditionally, it was peas and carrots, as you have here. Green onion works as a good substitute for white or yellow onion, and since you tend to use less, I believe it is less gassy. I’ve even used pieces of ginger and garlic (you can use powdered, if you want, sesame oil, and a bit of sesame seed. You can also make it vegetarian by omitting any meat. If you want a very light, but still excellent, version, try just egg and green onion, adding any spice you’d like. I’ve even made it with 5 spice powder!
Thanks for the recipe, Allysa! A nice alternative for leftover rice, when you don’t feel like making a fussy dinner. For those of us who enjoy bacon, bacon fried rice is a great choice!
This is a great recipe! Rice is an area where my meal prepping tends to lack. I get tired of my cilantro lime rice pretty fast. This is a recipe I’ll be trying out this week for sure. Thank you!
Best fried rice I have ever made. Thankyou!
