No Bake Buckeye Peanut Butter Balls

Remember that one time when I told you that I didn’t like chocolate? Well, still to this day I don’t like to eat a slice of chocolate cake. But the thing that got me to start eating chocolate was to combine it with peanut butter or caramel. I LOVE the peanut butter and chocolate combination! It is probably why I am so obsessed with these peanut butter bars.

My ten-year-old son loves to be with me in the kitchen and wanted to make a treat. Since it is still blazing hot here in Utah, I told him that it had to be a no-bake treat and so he chose to make these! We had fun in the kitchen making these together. They are so simple to make and the perfect chocolate peanut butter no bake treat!

How do you make buckeye peanut butter balls?

  • Start by adding peanut butter, butter, vanilla and powdered sugar to a large bowl and mix until dough forms. Roll into 1 inch balls and put onto a waxed paper lined cookie sheet. Freeze until firm 20-30 minutes.
  • Melt chocolate chips in the microwave stirring every 30 seconds until smooth. Press a toothpick into the top of each ball and dip into the chocolate. Drizzle the tops with melted chocolate and sprinkle with sea salt if desired.
  • Place them back on the cookie sheet and refrigerate until set.

Do Buckeyes need to be refrigerated?

I like to store mine in the refrigerator. But if you use shelf-stable peanut butter, they may not need to be refrigerated.

How long can you keep buckeye balls in the refrigerator?

Store them in an airtight container up to two weeks in the refrigerator.

Can you freeze buckeye balls?

Yes. They can be frozen for up to three months.

    Too much sugar, I think. I let the peanut butter part set in the freezer for 40 minutes, and when I went to dip them in the chocolate, some of them fell apart. I kept putting them back in the freezer and re-melting the chocolate, but they still fell apart. I wound up with 47 of them! If I make these again, I’ll cut the sugar in half.

    I made 70 balls with 1 recipe. I don’t know where the 24 count came from. Mine are at least 1 inch balls (maybe even a bit bigger). My family loves them

    They taste amazing! However- I thought 6 cups of powdered sugar was a bit much (I was running low on it and I didn’t want it to make too many) and did 3 or so cups. I also added about a cup of crushed graham crackers and used a bag and a half of chocolate chips rather than 4 cups.
    So I made a lot of tweaks for myself, and I don’t think it’s very hard to mess this up. Delicious 👍

    These were scrumptious! Our oven was broken so I had to put together something quick for our school picnic, and everyone loved them. Definitely making these again 🙂

  5. If you’re a fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes then you make these for many of the games. They’re just called Buckeyes. And they’re a must for Christmas too. I’ve never made them using chocolate chips. We’ve always just used chocolate melts, both dark and milk chocolate.

    1. I was going to write “ these are called Buckeyes!” Nothing more than that. We don’t drizzle anything over the top in Ohio. They need to look like the nut?. Every Christmas my coworkers ask when am I going to make the Buckeyes. I live in Montana now and had the pleasure of introducing these delights to them! O H

    1. I have not tried this with vegan butter or fleishman margarine. Let me know what you think and how it turns out with your substitutions.

  6. I make Peanut Butter Balls often and have been making then for 55 years! My receipt is a little different! I use 3 cups Rice Krispies 3 cups powdered sugar mixed. Add 1 stick unsalted butter softened and 3 cups cups Skippy Peanut Butter. Mix well with hands and form balls and place on wax paper covered pan! Makes about 100 depending how large you form them! Place in freezer until frozen and place in two plastic bags and put two cups chocolate chips and 2 tablespoons of Crisco in a bowl and Microwave! Keep checking and stir after 2 minutes. I toss with a teaspoon and place back on same sheet. I do 50 at a time! You can add or delete ingredients to make it easier for you while forming balls or coating! Good luck!! ❤️

  8. What type of peanut butter ? Processed like Skippy or natural like Smuckers, just curious with 6 cups of powdered sugar, I want to make sure it is not overly sweet, I already know these are very good!
