This recipe tastes like its traditional Buffalo sauce but better! Itโs delicious!
The Sauce That Does It All
- Customizable Heat: Want it milder or spicier? Easily tweak it to your taste.
- Big Flavor, Simple Ingredients: Just a handful of pantry staples come together to create bold, spicy, tangy magic.
- Quick & Easy: Ready in minutes, seriously, itโs faster than running to the store!
- Versatile Sauce Goals: This homemade buffalo sauce is perfect for buffalo wings, sandwiches, wraps, dips, enchiladas, and anything else that needs a kick.
Ingredients Needed
- Hot Sauce: Frankโs Hot Sauce is the classic, and likely what started it all. Use your favorite, but if youโre unsure, Frankโs is always a win.
- Butter: Butter makes the sauce rich and smooth, and helps it stick. Add more for a milder sauce, or turn up the heat with cayenne.
- Add Smokiness: Stir in ยฝ teaspoon smoked paprika for a smoky twist.
- Fresh Garlic Option: Swap garlic powder for 1โ2 teaspoons minced garlic. Sautรฉ in butter until fragrant, then mix in the rest.
How to Make Homemade Buffalo Sauce
Making Buffalo sauce from scratch is surprisingly quick and easy! Once you give this homemade buffalo sauce recipe a try, youโll never buy it from the store again.
- Combine and Heat: Add hot sauce, butter, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne pepper, and garlic powder to a medium saucepan and whisk together. Then heat over medium heat.
- Simmer and Serve: Bring the mixture to a full boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5-7 minutes while whisking occasionally. Remove the pan from the heat and serve warm.
How to Store Buffalo Hot Sauce
This homemade buffalo sauce actually gets better as it sits, so donโt hesitate to make extra! I usually whip up a small batch, but doubling it works great.
- In the Refrigerator: Keep it in an airtight container (I prefer one with a screw-top lid) in the fridge for up to a month. Just give it a good shake before using. If you want it warm, only heat up the amount you need in the microwave.
- Pro Tip: If you notice the sauce separating, throw the slightly cooled sauce in a high-speed blender and blend for 20-30 seconds to emulsify the sauce!

This tasted delicious but the vinegar and chilis somehow seemed to have seriously irritated my lungs while cooking it. Having a hard time breathing tonight after making it. If you are asthmatic like me, just buy a bottle of buffalo sauce, even if you would prefer a sauce made with butter instead of soybean oul.
I have been making this Buffalo sauce for years and it is delicious. Over the years I stopped using garlic powder and started using fresh garlic instead. I add a little butter first and press one or two cloves and cook for 30 seconds or so until fragrant, then add in the rest of the ingredients. So good.
Yum! Sounds amazing! Thanks for sharing!
