I’m not saying I’ve eaten half a loaf of this Garlic Bread straight off the baking sheet…but I’m also not not saying that. It’s golden, cheesy, dripping with garlicky butter, and so good!

A Reader’s Review

Wow! I just made this to go with dinner and it was amazing! Best garlic bread I’ve ever had! I’ll be making this again.

Why This Garlic Bread Rules

  • Garlic in Every Nook and Cranny: I smother this bread in buttery garlic goodness from edge to edge—just the way I like it!
  • Real Butter, Real Love: I skip the margarine and slather on the real, melty butter—because nothing beats the real deal.
  • Parmesan + Herbs: Parmesan crisps up into golden perfection with just the right blend of two kinds of garlic and my secret ingredient, Italian seasoning.

Ingredients Needed

Overhead shot of labeled ingredients.
  • French Bread: The best bread to make garlic bread is a crusty loaf like French bread or a baguette. Soft loaves can become soggy.
  • Butter: I like to use salted butter (it adds great flavor!). Take it out early and soften it to room temperature, so it’s easier to mix and spread!
  • Parmesan Cheese: Freshly grated parmesan cheese melts the best and tastes divine!

How to Make Homemade Garlic Bread

This garlic bread recipe comes together in under 20 minutes—and it’s so tasty, you’ll want it on repeat! Keep this one handy, because you’ll be craving it again and again.

  1. Prep the Loaf: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut the French bread in half lengthwise, separating the top from the bottom, and place them, cut side face up, on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  2. Make the Butter Mixture: In a small bowl, add the softened butter, garlic powder, minced fresh garlic, Italian seasoning, and parmesan cheese. Mix to combine.
  3. Spread and Bake: Spread the butter mixture evenly on the cut sides of each half of the bread. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the butter is melted and a perfect golden brown. If desired, broil for 1-2 minutes for a crispier top. Sprinkle the top with fresh parsley for garnish if desired, and serve fresh.

Do I Need to Use Foil?

  • Yes—if you want soft, tender garlic bread. Just wrap it in foil before baking to lock in moisture and skip the crispy edges.
  • No foil? Expect golden, toasty perfection with a little crunch and melty cheese on top. Pick your vibe and bake accordingly!

How to Store Leftover Garlic Bread

If you make enough, you can have some for tomorrow’s dinner as well! Here is how you can easily store it and reheat it when you are ready!

  • At Room Temp: Garlic bread is best stored at room temperature. If it’s stored in the fridge, it can become hard and stale. It will stay good, wrapped tightly on your counter for 1-2 days.
  • To Reheat: Wrap the garlic bread in aluminum foil and place it in your oven at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until it’s heated through.
  • Garlic Butter Mixture: You can make the butter mixture and keep it in the refrigerator or freezer for up to 2 months. Soften it to room temperature when you are ready to use it.

My husband went to the grocery store the other day and came home with one of their focaccia
breads and it was awful….so I came across this recipe and I thought I’d give it a try to see if we could save the focaccia that he brought home. Well let me tell you, it was delicious!!! This recipe is now in my “favorites” folder.

Made this for my family after my mother left us, and my dad and brother both loved it, myself included! Thank you for helping this 19 year old bring her family together for a night of Italian. ???

Please send me specific baking directions. Are both sides placed on a baking sheet butter side up and baked open faced for the 12 minutes.

    1. Yes, you will butter both sides of the bread. That helps reach a crispy, flavorful edge of the bread crust. Enjoy!

This was delicious! I didn’t have any cheese on hand and didn’t want to go to the store so I just did without–it was still wonderful! I want to go eat the last two pieces now!

  7. I am going to make this bread with a homemade lasagna but wanted to double check..it says “spread evenly on each side of the bread”, does this mean the top of each half..or both sides of each half?

    1. MMM! That sounds delicious! You will spread it on top of each of the bread. Hope that helps! Enjoy! XOXO

      1. I think the wording would have been better understood if you said to butter on each half of the bread. At first I too though you meant each side (top and bottom) I knew that was wrong and it should be each half or slice..

This garlic bread has a different flavor from the store bought kind. But different in a good way! More herby. Felt like it could use just a little more oomf’ then it’d be perfect.

The best garlic bread is not a great enough description for how good this bread is! I made it for a group dinner. 5 adults and 2 kids, everyone loved it! It’s just as good the next day if you reheat it in the microwave. I had made double, so I still have some left and it’s ridiculously hard not to finish it all right now!

  11. Since my son and I can’t eat a whole loaf of bread by ourselves, can I bake half and freeze the other half (without baking) for later with the spread on it? This sounds delicious!

I bake several loaves, half them, let them cool completely, wrap in foil, place in a plastic bag and freeze. They freeze really well! Reheat gently.

    2. If you and your son can’t eat too much bread invite me over and I’ll eat what you and your son can’t eat.
