As soon as I got the kids to school I looked in my cupboard for ingredients and was able to throw this stroganoff into the slow cooker. It took under 5 minutes! All of my fellow busy moms rejoice.
It has minimal ingredients and the chicken cooks to tender and juicy perfection in the creamy mushroom sauce. I did use a can of cream of chicken soup but if you have some extra time you can make my homemade cream of chicken soup. The sauce is so easy, creamy, and perfect with some noodles tossed inside. - Chicken Breasts: I used boneless and skinless chicken breasts, cut into cubes.
- Sliced Mushrooms: I used regular brown mushrooms, but cremini and baby bella mushrooms also work!
- Cream Cheese: You will want this to be softened so your sauce turns out lump-free.
- Cream of Chicken Soup: Use canned soup for easy prep or make your own from scratch! Find my full recipe here. For more mushroom flavor, you can also use cream of mushroom soup.
- Dry Onion Soup Mix: You only need one packet to give this stroganoff all the flavor it needs.
- Salt and Pepper: Season to taste.
- Fresh Parsley: Chopped and added on top for garnish! I love adding fresh herbs to my dishes because they not only look great, but add extra flavor and aromatics as well.
- Large Egg Noodles: It wouldnโt be stroganoff without โem!

Hi Marianne, thank you for your question. You can use my recipe for homemade onion soup mix. Use 1/4 cup of this in place of the packet.
I use thighs instead of breast.

Can this be made in a dutch oven?
Hi Mel, thank you for your comment and question. This can be made in the dutch oven for sure!
-On the stove heat the dutch oven over medium-high heat. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in the dutch oven and add the chicken and mushrooms, and season with salt and pepper. Sautรฉ until the chicken is cooked through.
-In a medium-sized bowl add cream cheese, cream of chicken soup, and dry onion soup mix. Mix until incorporated and add to the dutch oven, recede the heat to medium, stir and cook for another 8-10 minutes, stirring continually until everything is well incorporated and heated through.
-serve over noodles.

Really good recipe!! Though I made a couple changes that definitely increased the flavor. I used skinless boneless chicken thighs that I seasoned with a bit of fire and smoke holy garlic seasoning and then browned on both sides in a skillet. Then I sliced into strips before adding to the slow cooker. Then in the same pan u put thin sliced and quartered sweet onions and the mushrooms and cooked them a bit til they just wilted and soaked up the chickens flavor. Then threw them in the cooker. Did everything else the same except I also added a teaspoon of lee and perrins Worcestershire sauce to the blended mix. Cooked it as instructed. It turned out absolutely amazing!!!
Made your cream of chicken soup. Cut the recipe in half except the mushrooms and started them on saute first to cook out a bit of the water before putting it all in my instant pot on low slow cook. Only took 2 hours and is absolutely delicious.
