What is Remoulade Sauce?

Remoulade sauce is a special condiment that hails from the heart of Louisiana. It’s known for its bold punch of flavor and is typically made with mayonnaise, a hint of spicy brown mustard, and a blend of Cajun seasonings that gives it a unique kick. But what truly sets this sauce apart is the addition of dill relish, a squeeze of lemon juice, and a dash of Louisiana hot sauce, which make it irresistible.

Ingredient List

This remoulade sauce perfectly balances savory, spicy, and creamy. You can adjust the amount of each ingredient to make it your own. The exact measurements are in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Mayonnaise: Mayo makes the sauce nice and creamy. For a lighter alternative, you can also use plain Greek yogurt.
  • Spicy Brown Mustard: Gives the sauce a tangy and slightly spicy kick. Honey mustard or Dijon mustard work if you want milder flavor.
  • Cajun Seasoning: Adds the classic smoky and mildly spicy flavor. You can make your own mix with spices like paprika and cayenne or use a pre-made Cajun blend.
  • Dill Relish: This adds tanginess and crunch to the mix.
  • Lemon Juice: To keep the flavor of the sauce bright.
  • Louisiana Hot Sauce: For the most delicious kick of spice!
  • Garlic Powder: Adds a subtle garlic flavor. For a more savory flavor, you can also use fresh minced garlic.
  • Paprika: Besides color, paprika adds a sweet and smoky taste. For a similar effect, you can use smoked paprika or chili powder.
  • Salt and Black Pepper: Adjust to taste!

Easy Remoulade Sauce Recipe

Making homemade sauces is so easy! Just whisk up your ingredients and then serve with all of your favorite Cajun-inspired meals. Or any meal, for that matter. Remoulade sauce has an extremely versatile flavor.

  1. Combine: In a small bowl, whisk all the ingredients together until well combined. Taste the sauce and adjust the salt and pepper.
  2. Let Flavors Meld: You can use the sauce right away, but I recommend covering it and placing it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Make it Spicy!

I made my homemade remoulade sauce mildly hot, but if you like it even more spicy, add more hot sauce or a dash of cayenne until the flavor is right!

Things to Use Remoulade Sauce For

Look no further if you’re asking what to use remoulade sauce for. This dipping sauce is great for anything fried, especially fried seafood or homemade chicken tenders. Here are some more ideas of things you can make at home.

Storing Leftover Louisiana-Style Remoulade Sauce

Once you’ve made your perfect batch of remoulade sauce, pop it in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge. It will stay good for up to 2 weeks. The ingredients may settle the longer it sits, so give it a stir before you use it again!

  1. 4 stars
Not sure what happened, but this was too salty for me I ended up adding some Greek yogurtโ€ฆI didnโ€™t add the salt at the end. The only thing I can figure is the Tonyโ€™s Cha creole seasoning or the dill pickles I minced (in place of dill relish). it was good, maybe just be careful.

  2. Perfect timing – we were able to harvest a few green tomatoes before our recent cold snap. This will be wonderful to serve with fried green tomatoes!
