Instructions on How To Cook Steak in an Air Fryer

Air frying a steak is a total game changer! It’s quick, juicy, and so easy, you might ditch the grill for good! Serve it with this strawberry salad with glazed walnuts and some Texas Roadhouse rolls, and dinner is served!

Steak

  • Prep: Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, prepare the steaks by rubbing them with olive oil on each side.
  • Cook: Rub Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper on each side of the steaks. Add the steaks to the air fryer basket and then cook for 12 minutes, turning over after 6 minutes. When done to your preference, let the steaks rest for 10 minutes.

Steak Cooking Times and Temps

  • Medium-Rare: Cook for 10 minutes, flipping at 5 minutes. (135°F)
  • Medium: Cook for 12 minutes, flipping at 6 minutes (145°F)
  • Well-Done: Cook for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway. (160°F)

For perfect doneness, use a meat thermometer and remove the steak about 5°F before it hits your target temp (it’ll continue cooking as it rests).

Top Tips for Perfect Air Fryer Steak

  • Room Temperature: Have your steaks at room temperature before cooking for the best results. This helps the steak cook evenly.
  • Use Dry Steak: Pat your steak dry with a paper towel before cooking to ensure even browning.
  • Spacing: Avoid overcrowding the air fryer so the air can circulate evenly around the steaks.

Garlic Herb Butter

  1. Combine: In a small bowl, add unsalted butter, garlic, fresh rosemary, thyme, and parsley.
  2. Mix: Mix until smooth, and serve the steaks smothered in the garlic butter!

How to Store Leftover Steak

Got leftover steak? If the answer is yes, save it for tacos, fajitas, salads, sandwiches, and more! Here’s how to store and reheat it properly.

  • In the Refrigerator: Store your steak in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • To Reheat: Preheat your oven to 250°F and heat the steak until it reaches an internal temperature of 110°F for the best results.
  • Serve Cold: Slice the steak thinly and let it come to room temperature for a few minutes. Then, add it to a salad or make a tasty steak sandwich.

Way too easy. My husband said it was the best ever. I never thought I’d get him away from his icky charcoal grill. Now we can have steak and he won’t smell like smoky coal all night! I did inch-thick filets and they were perfect. Thanks for this!

  2. Can’t wait to try this! I love grilled steaks, but you don’t always want to stand around outside when it’s really cold or really hot! Also, when we seat them in a skillet, it smells up our house for ages! Do you have cooking times for thicker steaks, like 1.5-2”?

I could not believe how amazing my T-bone steak came out!!!! I will only cook steaks in the airfryer from here on out! The t-bone was about an inch thick & it took 12 minutes total and it came out being the perfect mix between medium well & well done, juicy and not chewy at all. The knife really cut through it like butter I couldn’t believe it! The herb garlic butter on top was *chef’s kiss*!!!! Definitely will be putting this in a weekly rotation. Thank you for this wonderful recipe!

I finally have a steak WIN!!! for years I’ve had disappointed outcomes with all types of steaks Your insight on how to prepare the perfect steak in the air fryer was spot on!!! I believe the preheating made all the difference, and the marinate before left my husband in a state of unbelief…. as he asked “Did You make this???” WINNING! Thank You!

I used different spices for the steak but your cooking method. I will never make steak any other way again. It turned out perfect! Thank you.

    1. It shouldn’t be! You should always let your meat rest for 5-10 minutes to let all of the juices soak in. If you are worried about it getting cold, then you can always cover it with foil!

This was so surprisingly delish! I didn’t think air fryed beef could possibly turn out well but I didn’t have time to deal with a stove or BBQ tonight, so I gave it a go. I didn’t have time, this time around, to try all of your seasoning suggestions either (next time cause it sounds yummy), but I still worked your recipe method. My steak didn’t appear to be quite 1” thick so I adjusted my cooking time down to 7 minutes total for medium rare and it was spot on. I allowed it to rest uncovered for about 10 minutes before cutting into it. The outside wasn’t as crusty as I’d like but that’s likely because I didn’t let it cook as long as yours. No matter the steak was super delish and the texture amazing.

What I did – I rubbed it with Olive Oil like you suggested and also generously rubbed on some Kinders Buttery Steakhouse Rub before placing in my 400°F pre-heated air fryer. I flipped the steak half way through and melted garlic butter was poured over top after removing it from the oven. It’s my go-to method from now on! It really was that good.

For Reference, I used a 6 qrt Instant Vortex Plus Air Fryer with ClearCook & OdorErase

    1. Also for reference, my steak was a Porterhouse cut. And because of my time crunch, I did not allow the steak to come to room temp before placing in the oven. This would be why my steak didn’t come out as crusty as it should have. That part was definitely my doing.

I tried this recipe with small filet on my neice and husband a few months ago . Now my husband wants we to cook them this way all the time. This is Super way to cook them. They come out fantastic.

  9. I like to sous vide my steaks, but can I modify this to add the final sear without getting too much gray band? (None of the photos show cut steaks!)

    1. I haven’t tried that before with this recipe. I imagine that it would work! If you do, let me know how it turns out!

    OMG! Best recipe ever!

I love steak but never make will from now on!
