Instructions on How To Cook Steak in an Air Fryer
Air frying a steak is a total game changer! It’s quick, juicy, and so easy, you might ditch the grill for good! Serve it with this strawberry salad with glazed walnuts and some Texas Roadhouse rolls, and dinner is served!
Steak
- Prep: Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, prepare the steaks by rubbing them with olive oil on each side.
- Cook: Rub Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper on each side of the steaks. Add the steaks to the air fryer basket and then cook for 12 minutes, turning over after 6 minutes. When done to your preference, let the steaks rest for 10 minutes.
Steak Cooking Times and Temps
- Medium-Rare: Cook for 10 minutes, flipping at 5 minutes. (135°F)
- Medium: Cook for 12 minutes, flipping at 6 minutes (145°F)
- Well-Done: Cook for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway. (160°F)
For perfect doneness, use a meat thermometer and remove the steak about 5°F before it hits your target temp (it’ll continue cooking as it rests).
Top Tips for Perfect Air Fryer Steak
- Room Temperature: Have your steaks at room temperature before cooking for the best results. This helps the steak cook evenly.
- Use Dry Steak: Pat your steak dry with a paper towel before cooking to ensure even browning.
- Spacing: Avoid overcrowding the air fryer so the air can circulate evenly around the steaks.

Garlic Herb Butter
- Combine: In a small bowl, add unsalted butter, garlic, fresh rosemary, thyme, and parsley.
- Mix: Mix until smooth, and serve the steaks smothered in the garlic butter!

How to Store Leftover Steak
Got leftover steak? If the answer is yes, save it for tacos, fajitas, salads, sandwiches, and more! Here’s how to store and reheat it properly.
- In the Refrigerator: Store your steak in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- To Reheat: Preheat your oven to 250°F and heat the steak until it reaches an internal temperature of 110°F for the best results.
- Serve Cold: Slice the steak thinly and let it come to room temperature for a few minutes. Then, add it to a salad or make a tasty steak sandwich.

Came out delicious used onions and garlic great
This recipe turned out awesome! I used a T-bone, 5 minutes each side (we like some pink in our steak), and it was perfect. Clean up was a breeze. Will definitely try this again!
Thank you for the lovely recipe Alyssa. The balance of flavors in the herb butter is very nice (though shamefully & admittedly I did boost the garlic quantity-as I usually do:).
Our air fryer is old and, a recent check showed it’s not reaching the temp set on the unit. The max is 400F which makes cooking a recipe like this one -to be cooked at 400F- a bit problematic, but it’s still not just manageable, but successful. I enjoy the challenges brought by the necessity to modify while cooking, so no problem here.
Well done on your generous contributions.!
Is th3 tempt.celsius..”
Fahrenheit. ?
I can’t cook a steak to save my life but this came out really great. Followed recipe exactly. Preheated airfryer (I have the rack kind not a basket)

Excellent.. will make this recipe again..
Your recipes for air fryer are 5* many thanks
Do you have cooking time for 1/2” or 3/4” steaks?
So dumb, doesn’t even tell you what temp to cook at
Hi Jay, it’s listed in step 1 of the instructions. Preheat air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
So dumb you didn’t pay attention to what you “read” before posting this rude comment Jay. Dumb & rude trumps just dumb—especially when dumb didn’t apply.
Shame on you.
Give better instructions please, the steak turned out boiled.
do you think flat iron steak would hold up well? Going to try this tonight!!!!
Yes, I think it would turn out great!
Cook time was too long. Turned out medium well. Also, no sear really. Just brown. Better than baking or boiling, but not what i would consider an acceptable steak cooking method
i had the same issue, cooked less, tim hoping for medium rare f got only the slightest hint of pink.
i think my steak wasn’t thick enough.
for the ease of cooking, will definitely try again!
